Here's This Week's Memory Verses.
Here's the Bible memory plan that I use. Each week, I memorize two new verses and review certain verses from previous weeks. Each day of the week, I try to work with the verses until I can recite them from memory. The verses will appear again on the list (for review) after 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, etc weeks.
One of the problems I've always had with other memory programs is that there is either no review, or there is too much review. With no review, I forget the verses. With too much review, I remember the verses, but find myself far too limited on how many verses I can memorize (and still review).
I feel that this plan takes the best of both worlds. By reviewing verses more in the immediate future but less in the distant future, they are kept fresh long enough and reviewed frequently enough to make them "stick." But, by doubling the time between reviews, the list of review verses grows very slowly. Starting with the second week, we are reviewing two verses per week. Starting with the fourth week, we are reviewing four verses per week. Starting with the eighth week, we are reviewing six verses per week. 16th week: 8 verses, 32nd week: 10 verses, 64th week: 12 verses, 128th week: 14 verses, 256th week (five years): 16 verses. Even after 80 years, we're only up to 24 verses per week of review. (These are in addition to the two new verses each week.) I'm finding that the review portion takes almost no time at all, since they are still relatively fresh in my mind.
At two verses per week, we're able to memorize over 100 verses per year. In only 10 years, that's 1000 verses. In a lifetime, that can be as much as 8000 verses, or 1/4th of the bible! Now that's a goal!
If you're wondering how I select the verses and generate the new and review verses, here's what I do. As I'm reading the Bible each day, I jot down the reference to each verse that I would like to memorize. Similarly, I jot down verses from sermons or personal study too. I try to get all verses that have doctrinal significance, are good for soul-winning, or are especially uplifting. Then, usually once a week, I gather up those references and enter them into a list of future verses to memorize. Weekly (12:05am Sunday) my computer removes the top two verses in the list and adds them to the memory list. Then, it takes the memory list and puts the first pair of verses (the two that were at the top of the other list) and inserts them into the web page as the new verses to memorize. Then, it takes the 2nd, 4th, 8th, 16th, 32nd, 64th, etc pair and puts them in the web page as the review verses.
Follow along with me, and reap the benefits of hiding God's Word in your heart! Come back every Sunday (anytime after 12:05am CST) and print out the Weekly Memory Verses and review verses, then work through them during the week. You'll be surprised at just how easy it really is!
